Comments, Observations and Musings on the Journey of Life

Watch out, here comes the Martins…

Journal,

Guess its time for another laugh moment.

Been laughing with my kids. Thursday at noon has been our family get-together time for a number of years. We use this mostly just to catch up on personal family stuff. It is important to make sure that we are in touch with one another on a regular weekly basis. Life is too short to get too busy not to share a bit of family love.

Anyway, today the kids were laughing about this song that Andre had introduced to us a good time ago. It was titled, ‘What I love About Sunday,’ by Craig Morgan.

The song includes a bit about the Martin family. Regardless of any resemblance to my family, the song was actually about those Martins over across Greasy Creek up on Billy Goat Hill.  :)

The laughter had to do with the take on that mean red-headed kid who was known for breaking windows. It also spoke of sweet Miss Betty who likes to sing off key. Naturally we Martins never did have a red-headed kid that liked to break windows. And my Betty, why she can sing like a nightingale. This proves that the song was never about us.

Boy I wish to share the song with you, but couldn’t find a copy to put on my journal. Oh well, here are a couple of the lyrics:

 - That’s What I Like About Sunday -
Craig Morgan

Raymond’s in his Sunday best,
He’s usually up to his chest in oil an’ grease.
There’s the Martin’s walkin’ in,
With that mean little freckle-faced kid,
Who broke a window last week.
Sweet Miss Betty likes to sing off key in the pew behind me.

That’s what I love about Sunday:
Sing along as the choir sways;
Every verse of Amazin’ Grace,
An’ then we shake the Preacher’s hand.
Go home, into your blue jeans;
Have some chicken an’ some baked beans.
Pick a back yard football team,
Not do much of anything:
That’s what I love about Sunday.

Ooh, new believers gettin’ baptized,
Momma’s hands raised up high,
Havin’ a Hallelujah good time
A smile on everybody’s face.
That’s what I love about Sunday,
Oh, yeah.

That’s what I love about Sunday,
Oh, yeah.

While I’m in a laughing mood, let’s see if there isn’t something else that may be funny. Hmmmmmm…..

Ok, What if cartoons characters got saved….

Ever thought what it would be like if people’s favorite cartoon characters really got saved. Well, listen to this song. It tells the tale –

Nuff on the laughter side of things. Well, it wouldn’t be proper if I didn’t draw your attention to heavenly things. Let me share something with you that reaches back into yesteryear.

Do you remember the days before television…

I remember them well enough. I remember when we would sit around the radio to listen to Red Ryder, the Lone Ranger, Amos and Andy, Dragnet, Fibber McGee and Molly, only to mention a few. The radio was our entertainment. What a joy just to set there and let your imagination run free. Now all of this was back in the 40s and early 50s.

Then a bit later we’d begin to hear a bit of religious programming. Now Betty and I didn’t even have a television until 1974. (Believe it or not.) But I well remember over the years when we would travel, that I would turn the radio to a religious station out of Mexico or New Orleans. There you could hear all kinds of preaching and singing.

Well, I said all that to say this. Some of my earliest memories about the things of the Lord, come by way of radio. In fact, I even take a longing for those days at times. Guess this is why I dearly love the song, ‘I heard It First on the Radio,’ by the Gaithers.

I’m going to share one more video to close our this journal entry. Take time to get mellow. The video isn’t as clear as I would like, but it sure speaks of the wonderful early days of radio.

Take a listen:

What can you add to that? We’ve had a chance to laugh, but we’ve also had a chance to let our hearts become mellowed with song.

Just wanted to say that I love you in Christ. And remember,

Jesus loves you more.

Buddy

Hey Uncle Buddy,
Everytime I here that song ” What I love about Sundays” i can’t help but to think about ya’ll. I laugh and cry at the same time. Moma always told me that I would miss the days of growing up and I do so much. Now there is a song about that called ” You’re going to miss this” not sure who sings it. And I do miss the Sundays of going to Church at Boyce with you. The song ” I heard it first on the radio” is a great song. This is the first time I’ve heard it. I didn’t hear “it” first on the radio since we had TV when I was born, ha-ha But I could say that the first place I heard it and it stuck would be from you… in Boyce. I remember that building pretty well. Even today when we drive though Boyce I think about it. And I miss those days… and now my kids are grown and wishing they were older and I tell them… you’re going to miss this when it’s gone. The one thing that has been with me and my kids and will forever will be there is God’s love! Something that none of us would ever turn away! Thank you Uncle Buddy for helping plant the mustard seed! Love you bunches! See you soon.

Hi Sherri,

Thanks for writing. Love hearing from you.

Your mama said it right. I think most of us miss the days of ‘growing up.’ Seems like the good memories get stored in our special memory bank. The bad ones get muddled over time.

I’ll have to check out the song ‘You’re going to miss this.’ And I well remember the old days in Boyce. Such memories. In looking over time, I can see the Lord’s fingerprints on how Christian Challenge got started and how the Lord has been so good to us through the years. As for missing Sundays at Boyce, we are still holding your place. We’ve got the right front section of the church pretty much filled up with Martin kin. : )

- I’ll need to put up a picture of the old building in Boyce. -

I love you more than much. Sherri, you are one of my favorite nieces. And I am going to count on the ’see you soon.’

Love from Uncle Buddy

Dear Brother Buddy,

I’m still moved everytime I hear that song. For me, it stirs up the memories of growing up in Pollock and how we would drive to Pineville to attend church at First Baptist on Main Street. Every now & then we were able to make it on Wednesday’s. (Matter of fact I can still remember eating supper on Wednesday nights like we do now at Christian Challenge: Good Memories….) It’s somewhat sad for me at times because I remember the man I’ve always looked up to (my father) leading us to church. I can remember his desire to live for God even up to his death. My father instilled in me the determination that has helped me triumph over so many obstacles. I thank God for the priviledge I had by having him in my life for the 27 years that I did.
Now, I am so thankful for the realization that I can cry “Abba Father” and my God will be there for me just as my dad was. God has been so good to me & Mackenzie and I am - each day - trying to be the person He wants me to be.
So, you might ask, “What do I love about Sunday’s?” Well, it can be summed up in one word that Nathan has taught us about recently: Community. I love the people of Christian Challenge!!! Without them, I truly don’t know where I would be. It is because of these wonderful brothers’ & sisters’ in Christ that I have been able to realize that God loves me - Just As I Am…..

Your “restored” sister in Christ,

Donna

To my ‘restored sister in Christ,’

What a treasure that your dad left you with so many good memories. That is what I want to leave my kids. After all we only pass through this life one time. And what can we leave if not something for our kids and grandkids to remember. Especially when those memories are about the Lord and His church.

Thank you Donna, for sharing your heart. As for Christian Challenge, it is like the Mexican would say, “Mi casa es su casa.” For all of us this means, ‘My home church is your home church.’

Isn’t it great to be home. : )

With all God’s love,

Buddy
